DESCRIPTION
The American Red Cross Wilderness and Remote First Aid course is designed to provide individuals a foundation of first aid principles and skills to be able to respond to emergencies and give care in areas that do not have immediate emergency medical services (EMS) response. This includes wilderness and remote environments, including urban disasters, such as earthquakes and hurricanes. The program emphasizes experiential learning and major portions of the course are taught in an outdoor settings. The program is based on the 2010 Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Wilderness First Aid Curriculum and Doctrine Guidelines and offers enhanced content and topics to meet OSHA’s Best Practices for Workplace First Aid Training Programs and has been updated to reflect the latest emergency cardiovascular care science.
LENGTH
In-Person: 16 hours
INTENDED AUDIENCE
Hikers and backpackers, scout leaders and older scouts, boaters, farm workers, utility workers in remote areas, forest rangers, law enforcement and rescue crews, and disaster response team members. Any youth-serving organization members as well as adults who participate in outdoor recreational activities or who work in wilderness or remote settings where emergency medical services (EMS) response is more than 1 hour away.
PREREQUISITES
- Current Adult CPR/AED certification (minimum)
- Be at least 14 years of age on or before the last scheduled session of the course
REQUIREMENTS
Participants must:
- Attend the in-person skills session and actively participate in all course activities, including assuming various roles during skill practices and assessment scenarios.
- Demonstrate competency in all required skills.
- Successfully complete all assessment scenarios.
- Pass the final written exam with a minimum grade of 80%.
CERTIFICATION
Upon successful completion, participants will be issued a digital certificate by email from the American Red Cross that is valid for 2 years.
