DESCRIPTION
The American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor/Instructor Trainer Recertification Course gives instructors/instructor trainers the opportunity to review the course knowledge and skills within a formal course setting to maintain their American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor/Instructor Trainer certification. Successfully completing this course is the only method for maintaining certification as an American Red Cross Lifeguarding instructor.

INTENDED AUDIENCE
Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructors and Lifeguarding Instructor Trainers.
PREREQUISITES
Entry into the course is strictly limited to those who meet the prerequisites.
Participants must:
- Possess a current, or expired by no more than 1-year, American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor/Instructor Trainer certification.
- Successfully complete the online session of the Lifeguarding Instructor/Instructor Trainer Recertification course prior to the in-person session. (Assigned after registration.)
REQUIREMENTS
Participants must:
- Successfully complete the online session, including each lesson and assessments.
- Attend the in-person skills session and actively participate in all course activities, including assuming various roles during skill practices and assessment scenarios.
- Complete the skill practice and polish session, demonstrating skills to the standard.
- Demonstrate instructor-level skill competency in all skills. This means being able to demonstrate all of the skill steps as they are written, in the correct order, and in accordance with the proficiency criteria to meet the objectives of the skill.
- Conduct one (1) teaching assignment as part of the skill practice and polish session.
- Pass the written exam with a minimum grade of 80%.
CERTIFICATION
Upon successful completion, participants will be issued a digital instructor certificate by email from the American Red Cross that is valid for 2 years.
To maintain certification, Lifeguarding Instructors/Instructor Trainers must successfully complete the Lifeguarding Instructor/Instructor Trainer Recertification course prior to expiration.
NOTE: The teaching history requirement has been eliminated for Lifeguarding Instructors/Instructor Trainers who have completed the r.24 Lifeguarding Instructor/Instructor Trainer update as they must complete a blended learning recertification course with an in-person session.
